Fumerola grow as crusted, chimney-like mounds around volcanic vents. They need volcanism: each species keeps to its own kind of geysers or magma, on icy, rocky-ice and rocky worlds.

Look for them next to geological signals. Their colour follows an element in the crust, and their colony range is the shortest of all genera.
