Bacteria form flat, patchy mats on the ground and are easy to miss from the air: look down, not up. They grow in almost every thin atmosphere, from neon on frozen worlds to sulphur dioxide on warm ones, and each atmosphere has its own species.

Most species pay little, but Informem, Volu and Nebulus are worth the trip. The wide colony range means more driving between samples than for most genera. Depending on the species, the colour follows the star or an element in the planet's crust.
